TargetCool in Exosome Hair Therapy: What is it and Why We Use It
If you’ve read through what we do for hair loss, you will have seen TargetCool named alongside E50 Exosome. It is the cooling and delivery device we use during each session.
But let’s explain what TargetCool actually is, why it is paired with exosome therapy, and what it means for you during a treatment.

TargetCool is a clinical cooling device made by RecensMedical (South Korea)
It uses a high-purity CO₂ cartridge to deliver precise, controlled skin cooling, with a second "boost" mode designed to help topicals reach the layers of skin beneath the surface
At Hair Revive it is used alongside microneedling and E50 Exosome to keep sessions comfortable and support the delivery of the preparation into the scalp
It is not a hair loss treatment on its own. It is the tool that helps deliver the treatment
What Is TargetCool?
TargetCool is a handheld medical device designed to cool a small patch of skin, rapidly and precisely, to a controlled temperature.
The device is made by RecensMedical, a Korean medical technology company, and has an FDA 510(k) clearance in the US (meaning the FDA has confirmed it is substantially equivalent to existing cleared devices; clearance is not the same as FDA approval).
In the UK it is distributed to clinics for use in aesthetic, dermatological and hair loss protocols.
How it works
A small, high-purity CO₂ cartridge sits inside the handpiece. When the we run the device across the target area of skin, the CO₂ is released in a controlled way and the tip cools the skin to a set temperature in the range of around -10°C to 5°C, depending on the mode selected.
Because the cartridge is a sealed CO₂ system, there is no spraying of cryogenic gas into the room and nothing for the patient to inhale. The cooling stays at the handpiece tip.
The two modes that matter for hair therapy
For exosome hair treatments, two of the device's modes are relevant.
Cooling / Freezing
This bring the skin temperature down briefly to reduce sensation, soothe the treated area, and support comfort during microneedling.
Boost
This mode airs the cooling with a short, controlled action that helps topicals sit on, and travel into, the surface layers of the skin more effectively than they would from a plain topical alone. The boost container on the device can hold up to around 3.5 ml of a prepared solution.
Why Pair a Cooling Device With Exosome Hair Therapy?
This is the question most patients ask. A cooling device seems like a comfort gadget. What is it actually doing in a regenerative-medicine session?
There are three practical reasons.
Comfort
Microneedling creates lots of very small, shallow channels in the scalp. It is a well-tolerated procedure, but there is a real sensation to it. Cooling the scalp in the moments before and during a microneedling pass brings that sensation down significantly.
That means many patients do not need a topical anaesthetic, and those who use one tend to find the session more comfortable overall. The practical result is a calmer, quieter session than microneedling without cooling would be.
Transdermal support for the preparation
The "boost" mode is the part that matters most for exosome delivery. In plain terms, cold can briefly change the state of the outer skin layers in ways that help topicals stay in contact with the skin and travel into the surface layers. When paired with the microchannels created by microneedling, this is part of why the E50 preparation has a practical route down towards the follicles rather than sitting on the surface.
It is not a magic skin-permeability switch. It is a supporting factor alongside microneedling and the preparation itself.
Reducing redness and minor reactions after the session
Cooling narrows the small blood vessels near the skin's surface for a short time. In practice this keeps the post-session redness and any minor swelling to a minimum, which is part of why most patients walk out of a session looking more or less as they did when they walked in, rather than with a visibly treated scalp.
TargetCool is not the "active ingredient". The E50 Exosome preparation is. What TargetCool does is make the session comfortable and give the preparation a better shot at reaching where it needs to go.
Is TargetCool Safe?
TargetCool is a regulated medical device used widely in aesthetic, dermatological and hair clinics internationally. The risks associated with controlled skin cooling are well understood and typically mild.
What you might notice
Brief cooling or tingling sensation during use
Light redness immediately after the session, usually settling within hours
Occasional mild swelling in the treated area, usually settling within a day or two
These overlap with the side effects of the microneedling and exosome application themselves, so what you actually notice after a session is a combined effect rather than a separate "TargetCool reaction".
Who should not use TargetCool:
People with cold-sensitivity conditions such as Raynaud's phenomenon, cold urticaria, or cryoglobulinaemia
Those with an active scalp infection or inflammatory skin condition in the treatment area
Those with broken or compromised skin in the area to be treated
Situations where your we decide controlled cooling is not appropriate for your specific medical history
Your consultation at Hair Revive will review your full medical history and flag any reason to adjust or avoid the protocol.
A note on regulation
TargetCool is FDA 510(k) cleared in the US. For UK use, we expect the specific import and distribution compliance of the device on our clinic floor to be confirmed by our medical director; this would typically include CE/UKCA conformity documentation held by the supplier.
None of that changes what the device does clinically. It simply means the device has been through formal regulatory pathways before reaching clinical use.
How We Use TargetCool at Hair Revive
After the initial treatment is done, we apply TargetCool to achieve the desired effect of making the treatment more comfortable and supporting your body's natural uptake of the E50-H treatment.
Inside a typical session
AI Scalp Scan
We assess the affected area at a microscopic level with our AI Scalp Scan.
Microneedle the Area
We pass a microneedle across the affected treatment area.
Apply E50-H Exosome
The E50-H Exosome Treatment is topically applied to the prepared area.
Apply TargetCool
TargetCool is applied to make the process more comfortable and support treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About TargetCool
No. TargetCool is a cooling and delivery device. The active ingredient in your session is the E50 Exosome preparation. TargetCool is the tool that helps that preparation be delivered comfortably and effectively.
TargetCool is made by RecensMedical, a Korean medical technology company. It is distributed in the UK to clinics including Hair Revive.
Most patients describe the cooling as controlled and comfortable rather than painful. There is a cold sensation during use, and brief tingling is possible, but the device is specifically designed to avoid the "shock" cold that older cryotherapy approaches could produce.
Mild redness immediately after a session is common and usually settles within hours. Occasional mild swelling is possible. Because TargetCool narrows small blood vessels temporarily, post-session redness tends to be lighter than it would be from microneedling alone.
TargetCool is used in a range of aesthetic and dermatological contexts beyond hair loss, including skin treatments and as a comfort layer for other procedures. In the context of our hair loss protocols, though, TargetCool is used alongside E50 Exosome rather than as a standalone service.
TargetCool is FDA 510(k) cleared in the US, meaning the FDA has confirmed it is substantially equivalent to existing cleared devices. Clearance is a different regulatory status from approval. In the UK, medical devices operate under their own conformity framework (CE / UKCA), and the specific compliance documentation for the device is held by our supplier and reviewed by our medical director.
They are different tools. A topical anaesthetic reduces sensation by numbing the skin chemically; TargetCool reduces sensation by cooling the skin and also contributes to the delivery of the preparation. Many patients find TargetCool alone is enough for comfort. The two can be combined where appropriate.
